Best practices for using your aircon unit in winter
Aircon units are either not used in winter or used to generate warm air to heat up offices and homes.
We often get asked whether it is bad for your aircon unit to blow warm air all day long.
Whether your unit is blowing hot or cool air for long periods of time, neither will harm your unit, however just as with any appliance that is used regularly, it needs to be serviced and maintained regularly to ensure it continues to work efficiently and effectively.
At a minimum, you should be changing the filter on your central aircon unit once every three months—and as often as once a month if your system is running all the time.
Neglect this chore, and a dirty filter can lead to poor air flow or freezing up of your unit’s evaporator coil.
A filthy filter could add 5% to 15% to your electricity, and will shorten the lifespan of your whole system. This could also make the air unclean and even unsafe. Fortunately, replacement filters are pretty low cost.
So whether you are using your aircon unit for warm or cool air, ensure that it is maintained and serviced regularly.
